Scumpulse Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

We are a 4 piece Scottish black metal band that comes with a healthy dose of crusty punk… If Phil Vane had pumped Abbath, that kinda thing

2.How would you describe the musical sound on the recording that you have released so far?

Same as above really - a healthy mix of black metal and crust punk.

3.The band formed out of the ashes of 'Fifteen Dead' and 'Tower Of Flies', what was the decision behind breaking up those bands and forming a new one?

Andrew is still active with Tower of Flies, expect some new material sometime in the future. As for Fifteen Dead, we had just finished a tour of the US that, although was good fun, presented us with some issues. Ross made the decision to leave not long after we came home and asked if I wanted to come with him. This was the beginning of where we are at now.

4.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band has explored so far with the music/

Terrible bosses, bad jobs, shit towns and liking the pub a bit too much. It’s less snow clad Orc battles and more trackie clad pub chibbing.

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Scumpulse'?

Magnus’ Gran used to make a hallucinogenic jam by collecting the scum from the top of a boiling pan of liberty cap mushrooms and cooking it up with brambles and sugar. It’s a traditional Highland recipe. When you take it you can feel the pulse of the universe. It also helped me get off the gear.

6.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?

We have really enjoyed all the places we have visited to play, you always get to meet some really cool people and see some interesting cities you normally wouldn’t get to. Our stage show is loud, energetic and raw.

7.Do you have any touring or show plans once the new album is released?

Yeah, we are heading out on a UK and European tour to promote the record. We will most likely be doing this over the summer of 2018. Keep your eye on our social media for more info in the very near future.

8.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black metal, punk and crust/

We always worried that the punks would find us too metal and the metal heads would find us too punk but overall people seem very warm to it. Someone once described us as “music for that small Venn diagram of people that like Black Metal but hate Hitler” which we quite like.

9.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

We will keep pushing ourselves to be continually putting out a better release than the last. I imagine it won’t stray too much from the metal/punk format but we will definitely be keeping things interesting

10.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Immortal, Darkthrone, Emperor, Thorns, Celtic Frost, Motörhead, Skitsytem, Martyrdöd, Tragedy, ENT, Wolfbrigade

11.What are some of your non musical interests?

The pub, internet pornography, Class A – C’s, Youtube videos of people playing old computer games & meat

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Be excellent to each other
